On Starting and Creating

I don’t blog. In fact, I rarely write prose. So much so that even when I attend writing workshops I normally whisper to the facilitators that I’d prefer to do all if not most of their exercises as bits of dialogue. That’s how I think. No, scratch that – that’s how I prefer to write. It’s a preference really, not an unchangeable. Just like a lot of things about how we think and see ourselves as. Anyway, here we are; you and I – one reading, the other writing. The start of hopefully this kind of relationship between us, where we’ll often share a thought or two, on a passion subject, a thought or other. No matter how shallow or deep, profound or silly but hopefully always in a line encouraging growth or a new perspective ie. busy being born.

At times I’ll write, actually often (‘I’ being Kigondu 🙂 ). Other times Kamande will write (as often too I hope) and occasionally we’ll have guest writers. My co ninja on this if you don’t already know is Kamande Wambui, a Data guy/Techie, a rugby enthusiast, a dad and husband with a big big heart (that often beats to Chronixx ..hehe). We started the Busy Being Born Podcast in the second half of 2020, as we both turned a year older. We have since gone on to have numerous episodes, conversations, guests and lessons all focusing on consciously and consistently working to improve the self. I could go on and on about the two of us, what we revel in, what we share in common, what we hope to achieve with the platform and so on but not today. I trust you listen to the podcast episodes (and if you are yet to, I encourage you to pause here and start on any episode priss!). I say this because we often share on all this and catch you up on our stories quite often too, so, yeah.. you already know.

Creative confidence. That’s what I’m excited to share on and encourage as often this new year (2022). In fact there’s a folder titled ‘Martin Kigondu Ted Talk’ on my laptop that really highlights this. If you are new here (and didn’t pause earlier to listen to an episode at least), I’m Martin Kigondu and no, don’t search for the Ted Talk footage because it doesn’t exist, at least not yet. Anywho, in the folder I write about the turns, choices and doors I have gone for – just by trusting I could ‘try’. Just try, not excel, not be the best, just try. I continue to build a career in the arts and honestly, it’s just me following creative interests I am drawn to. I started out wanting to direct theatre, then I realized I was better suited as one if I understood and hopefully shone in acting (which I’d grown up trying to do), anyway – I started acting, went professional a few years in and was soon directing (fun fact I started professionally directing theatre at 26, something those before me started way later). I had started writing for theatre, then soon came screen, then directing film, then producing, then podcasting and so on, you get the drift. All this actually truly sparked kabisaa from me just enjoying poetry and rap music as a kid (and dance too) around ten and into teenage hood. And guess what? I’m thinking of getting into the booth and dropping bars soonest! Yes, Martomorphosis aka KG in the house! “Turn me up a little bit, just a little bit more.. Ah…” BARS. Yeah, don’t be surprised to hear a song or two by yours truly, someday.

Where am I going with this? Not the longwinded career …I mean, with this creative confidence concept. Where am I going with it? Well, I’m hoping to achieve two things, just two; One, to acknowledge it takes time, years even… and in that same breath say, things only start rolling when you start. You know that storo for a journey starting with one step? That’s legit my friend, trust it – start. Whatever it is your interest, aspiration or intention for improvement is, just start. You don’t have to be good at it, only that you find something that drives you in it; for some it’s fun, for some it’s ambition, for some it’s the money, for some it’s ‘hunger’, for some it’s to feel better about themselves – whatever your reason, just start. Start now. You don’t have to be all ready, start already.

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up”

Picasso

The second thing is to say I hope to speak more on Creative confidence as we go. You do not have to be great my fren, nope. To write that blog, or start that podcast, or write that poem, or write that play; YOU DO NOT, and I repeat, you do not need to be great at it. You only get better if you swallow the fear and self judgement, swallow the doubt and push away the destructions between you and starting and just start. Aki. That simple. Anyone can be creative, in fact everyone is and everyone can be. It’s just that we doubt ourselves so much or believe it’s only for Da Vinci or Njugush or Chappel or Denzel or Nungo or Mufasa. Get me right, I’m not saying we’ll all be phenomenal at it, I’m just saying we could be. All you have to do is try and by encouraging yourself to try as often, I promise you, even if you don’t end up as a Viola Davis, something special will be stirred in you. Closeness to absolutely being ‘in the moment’, if nothing else or you’ll discover you didn’t die after you tried. In short; creativity can be a skill yes but it’s also something we are all born with, we all have it. In fact it could be the one of the only reasons humanity has survived and continues to thrive. Creativity breeds innovation. So chin up my fren, you just have to engage the inner creative. You don’t need a masters in poetry to write a poem or a voice coach to sing or painting masterclasses to paint, you just need to try. I’m not saying you’ll be great at it neither I’m I negating the fact that teachers of the craft are super important to have by you to build your skill. Nope, I’m just saying start if it interests you.

Lastly, Picasso said it best, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up” and I totally believe that. Besides everything thing that I do in the arts and beyond, I also teach and train young kids and novices in the arts; poetry, drama, film and all and if there’s a thing to pick from them, especially the kids, reflecting on Picasso’s quote is – just do it. Why fear failure when there’s no concept of loss? ‘Adulting’ is what births the concept of having something to be lost.

Does ‘growing up’ mean losing our artistic selves? Because if it does, then I’m no grown up.

Drops mic:: Siongezi chochote kingine on that for now. Let’s keep talking. Engage us on the socials, share with a friend or two, re listen to your favourite episodes, send us questions and suggestions, all these gestures encourage us to keep going and growing. Tell us who you’d like to read from on the blog ama listen to on the podcast. And before I forget, I blog too, starting today ..haha.

Keep safe and do stay Busy being born ama vipi? Because you know what we say, if you are not busy being born, you are probably..
